The great equalizer no doubt is age. Regardless of how sexually healthy or active a man is during his younger years, age will eventually catch up and that sexual enthusiasm and energy would, in the course of time, diminish.

And when that happens, the main culprit is low testosterone levels. Testosterone is a hormone produced by the body.

In men, it is secreted by the testicles and the hormone stimulates sperm production and sex drive. Testosterone levels are very high in men from adolescence and decreases when they age.

When testosterone levels drop, it is almost always attributed to aging. However, for those who are still not in their twilight years but are already suffering from sudden drop in testosterone levels, it is most likely that something is amiss with their sexual health. This usually affects men.

Symptoms of low testosterone

Here are the top five signs or symptoms of low testosterone for men and how each affects their sexual health:

  1. Low or no appetite for sex. – Testosterone is the hormone that stimulates sex drive and once production of it decreases, it lessens the drive towards sex. In men, it also comes with the difficulty in achieving erection.
  2. Fatigue and low energy. – Sudden drop in energy levels and feeling fatigue most of the time without hardly doing any strenuous activity is a major sign that testosterone levels may have dropped quite significantly.
  3. Weight gain. – Low testosterone levels also results to loss of muscle mass and strength which results to increased eating tendencies and eventually significant gain in weight. Research also shows that the genes responsible for containing body fat percentage in men are also the ones responsible for circulating testosterone levels, thus when the hormones decrease, body fat percentage increases.
  4. Mood swings or changes. – More prevalent in women than in men but the male species also experience it in the form of irritability, lack of focus, or worst depression.
  5. Weakening of the bones or decrease in bone mass. – Also called osteoporosis, this is more common in women than in men. Testosterone helps in the production and strengthening of bones and bone mass in the body, thus when the hormones decrease, men normally become susceptible to bone fractures.

Sexual health is important

So when people, who are not yet in their prime, starts feeling or seeing these symptoms, it is important that they consult their doctors to address the deficiency in the correct way. They are natural and pharmaceutical ways to increase testosterone.

Sexual health is not just about having that energy to maintain that high level of sex drive. It is also an integral part of keeping the overall health and well-being of a person both mentally and physically.
